Our team submitted, Paisaje del Sol: Nuestro Desierto de Diversion y Diversidad, to the Mexican Society of Landscape Architect’s 2024 international student competition in the capital of Baja California. With a theme of “landscape and restoration,” we participated in designing a public greenbelt in the urban core of Mexicali along the channelized Rio Nuevo through the act of immersing ourselves in the Sonoran desert landscape, the culture of Mexicali, and the renewed political efforts to restore water ways.
Our group analyzed the site conditions, worked with community partners, and learned about the regional ecological and social systems to design a climate resilient and culturally grounded project in service of Mexicali.
Design Objectives:
-Urban Heat Strategy, combat rising temperatures with cooling spaces
-Community utilization, create a park for all ages, groups, and uses
-Representation of the Sonoran Desert landscape, reflecting hyperlocal ecologies and memories of historic ecologies
