With a theme of “landscape and restoration,” we participated in designing a public greenbelt in the urban core of Mexicali along the channelized Rio Nuevo through the act of immersing ourselves in the Sonoran desert landscape, the culture of Mexicali, and the renewed political efforts to restore water ways. Our group analyzed the site conditions, worked with community partners, and learned about regional systems, ecological and social, to design a concept for a climate resilient and culturally grounded project in service of Mexicali. Designing with the intention of regaining presence and creating intimate spaces in nature. Each design was made with all foraged/ natural materials, a chosen animal, the four elements (earth, air, water, fire), movement, and an understanding of making- tied to indigenous&nbsp; weaving techniques and contemporary art. 1.
